I got a call from her the other day, and for the first time since everything started, she apologized. She apologized for the mean things she said to me, for making me take care of Wilder, for leaving me without saying why, for not going to my graduation or my banquet or my play, for not being a mother. I couldn't believe what I was hearing; I sat in silence waiting for her scream April Fools into my ear. For 5 years, a stranger inhabited her body, and for the first time I recognized her voice as a comforting thing. Not something to be scared of or cautious around, not something to baby and take care of, but something soothing; something I hadn't heard in a long time.
She told me that she had called Grandma, and I almost started crying. I hadn't been allowed to mention anyone in her family let alone her own mother in years. I was having a hard time processing the whole thing, but finally with tears in my eyes I told her that I was proud of her and that I had missed her terribly. It's a slow process. It's as if she was lost in the jungle for a few years without anyone around, but hopefully one day everything will be back to normal. Well, as normal as my family can be.
